Panthers break even

TIFTON — The Tiftarea Academy Panthers played four games Tuesday against the Brookwood School Warriors and gained victories in two of them.

The varsity girls moved closer to a winning record with a 42-24 pounding of Brookwood. The win raises their season mark to 8-10, including a perfect 2-0 in the region.

Jarrett McWhorter’s 13 paced her team, closely followed by 10 each from Caitlyn Albritton and Neeli Fortson.

In a low-scoring affair, the Panthers were defeated by the Warriors, 34-33. Sam Tucker and Ethan Mims tied for high scorer, both bucketing 13 points. Mims also had 10 rebounds.

The Panthers are now 5-8, 1-1 in region competition.

In junior varsity games, the girls won, 30-20, behind the 13 points of Maci Paulk. They remain unbeaten on the year, 6-0.

The boys found the going tough against Brookwood, falling 20-11. Logan Carswell had 8.

Tiftarea plays again tonight at Crisp Academy. The junior varsity girls tip off at 4 p.m., with varsity games slated to start at 6 p.m.

After the dust had settled, top honors had gone to the Norcross Blue Devils, who finished two strokes ahead of the Peachtree Ridge Lions, 294-296.

  • Tift County High has summer basketball camp

    Boys and girls basketball camps will be held at the Tift County High gymnasium for kids in grades Pre K-6, directed by Lady Devils head coach Julie Conner. There are several different camps being offered, including sessions in June and July.

     The blue squad was the victors 17-10 over the white team Friday in the annual Tift County Blue Devils spring game. The contest was the first preview of the 2013 team, which opens the regular season on Friday, August 30, with a home game against the Westover Patriots.

  • ABAC tennis finishes 9th in nation

    The ABAC Stallions are returning from Dallas, Texas as the nation’s ninth best tennis team in the NJCAA tournament. In addition to the national honors, one singles player and one doubles team advanced to the semifinals in their brackets. First place went to Tyler (Texas) Junior College, who totaled 47 points. ABAC had 24.5.

    Middle school and high school tennis players who want to improve all phases of their game should sign up for the summer tennis camp June 24-27 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required.
