The Irwin County High Indians wrestling team participated this past weekend in the Class A South Sectionals at  Montgomery County.
Team points are not recorded at this tournament, but Irwin would have been about fourth as a team. a good showing as three of the top four teams in Class A participated in this secional.
Overall, Irwin qualified six of the seven wrestlers that they took to Sectionals for the state tournament.
Senior Denzel Scott (shown) took first place at 106 pounds in dominating fashion by pinning all of his opponents.
At 126, sophomore Griffin Walker took second, junior Evan Paulk at 145 also took second place.
Senior Sam Tucker also took second at 285.
Sophomore Micah Powers took third at 195, while senior Taylor Hughes took fourth place at 220.
For Walker, Paulk and Powers, this will be their first appearances at the state tournament.
Senior Austin Padgett finished fifth at his weight class, which makes him an alternate at state in the event one of the top four are not able to compete.
Irwin has the fifth most kids in Class A competing at stae behind Gordon Lee (13), Holy Innocents (10), Commerce (9) and Athens Christian (8). It was the most wrestlers that Irwin County has sent to state since 2003.
