TIFTON —
The Tift County Lady Devils ran into a tough group of Westover Lady Patriots and were defeated 44-26 Saturday night.
The Lady Devils would strike the game’s first blow with a free throw, but Westover would quickly take the lead on back-to-back three-pointers by M. Smith. Tift would battle back. Brakia Bateman would have nine points in the period, but at the horn, they trailed, 12-10.
The second quarter would be all Lady Patriots. They Lady Devils would muster only a single bucket against an oppressive defense. Taking keen advantage of second chance baskets, Westover would go on a tear, extending an 18-12 lead midway through the second to a 16-point lead at the half, 28-12.
Proving their second quarter was no fluke, Westover came out on fire in the third. The Lady Devils were able to get some of their own offense rolling, but were still outscored by five. This allowed the Lady Pats to extend their lead at the break to 43-22.
After two frantic quarters, the action noticeably slowed down in the fourth, Westover even moving into a stall offense. Tift would win the scoring battle, 4-1, but it was too late and Westover held on, 44-26.
Smith of Westover led all scorers with 23, having accounted for 14 in the first half. Moore also added 23 for the Lady Patriots. Tift County was led by Bateman, who finished with 10 and Alexis Johnson, who had nine.
As of the press time, the boys game between Tift County and Westover was still ongoing.

Fields played, coached three eras of basketball
Imagine a player averaging 29 points per game for a career and receiving no college scholarship offers. That happened to Dona Fields.
Fields, as Dona Gaskins, is easily Berrien High's all-time leading scorer. She scored her 1,000th point as a sophomore and during her last three seasons was the Rebelettes' leading scorer in every game. She received no college attention, no offers. -

Brumby’s camp making quite a racket
Mike Brumby does not stay in one place for too long on the tennis courts. He has a full load of players at ABAC Friday, and he paces back and forth, court to court. One minute, he is giving encouragement, the next he is asking players to come over for an interview. Shortly, he has everyone gathered up outside the courts.
He is checking to see who is here. Then he moves into pairing them up into matches. -

Braves face rotation decision when Beachy returns
Frank Wren is facing a dilemma that general managers covet but also dread.
The Atlanta Braves must make room in an already deep rotation as Brandon Beachy is almost set to return from elbow surgery. Beachy was perhaps Atlanta's top starter when his 2012 season ended as he led the National League with a 2.00 ERA. - More Local Sports Headlines
