History has been made for Tift County High School as the girls swimming and diving team won the Region 1-AAAAA title Saturday in a battle against region foes Coffee, Lowndes, Colquitt, and Valdosta High. This is the first region title for the girls swim team.
The girls won overall with a score of 98 over Coffee's 85, as Lowndes finished third with 54.
Individual region champions were sophomore Anna Lee Atwater in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, sophomore Mary Shoup in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle and freshman Katelyn Seymour, Atwater, Shoup and junior Kendal King in the 400 freestyle relay.
Region runner's up were Shoup, King, Atwater and junior SK Bowen in the 200 medley relay, and Bowen in the 50 freestyle.
It was a major team effort as juniors Maggie Hobson, Anna Johnson, Sara Johnson, Madeline Strickland and Alex Hardy also had swims for points!
"Our future has never been brighter and today we are proud to hang the first banner for our swimming and sive teams, " said head swimming coach Ellen Mullis
The boys put up a valiant fight, placing second to Coffee.
Region champions came from senior Hunter Honeycutt was able to win individual region titles in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, while junior Conner Cross took first in the 100 breaststroke.
Region runner's up were Honeycutt, senior Tim Borem, Cross, and sophomore Hunter Cross in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay and Hunter Cross in the 500 freestyle.
Placing also for the boys were juniors JP Short, Dylan Holloway, Benjamin Deen, Alek Smith, Jack Lee and sophomore Connor Jacobson.
"I couldn't have asked for more out of my kids today. Today they gave me 110 percent and we put up the best swims we could have without question,” said Mullis
The swim team will head to the Class AAAAA state meet Feb. 10-11 at Georgia Tech to finish out their seasons.
"It has been a joy and privilege to coach these teams and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Blue Devils," said Mullis.

Barrentine does well on junior rodeo circuit
Brady Barrentine competed this past weekend in the Southern Junior Rodeo Finals in Ocala, Fla. This was his first year competing in the SJRA's rodeo season. He competed all year long in the breakaway roping, tie-down calf roping, team roping, ribbon roping and chute dogging.

Blazers win NCAA Division II national softball title
The Valdosta State Blazers are the 2012 NCAA Division II Softball National Champions after an impressive 4-1 victory over defending champion UC San Diego. The championship is Valdosta State’s sixth overall championship and first in softball. The win also marks the first softball national championship for the Gulf South Conference.

Courtney Albritton named All-American
Albritton took VSU and the entire Gulf South Conference by storm in just her freshman season. She was named the GSC's Freshman and Player of the Year while leading the conference in most categories.
