TIFTON – Area athletes from around the Tiftarea signed letters-of-intent to play college football Wednesday at their respective schools.
At Tift County High, three Blue Devils got the opportunity to play in college.
Malcolm Dixon signed with Charleston Southern, Micah McCant will play at Valdosta State, and A’Kail Parker inked with Ft. Valley State at the TCHS Library.
Dixon was a three-year starter who was named to the 1-AAAAA All-Region team in 2008 and 2009, and is expected to play quarterback for the Buccaneers. Dixon won the Iron Devil Award three seasons in a row.
Charleston Southern is a member of the Big South Conference, and will play in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division 1-AA).
McCant will play for David Dean in Valdosta and will join former Blue Devils Larry Dean, Britt Wilson and Jared Davis as a member of the Division II Blazer team that is a perennial power out of the Gulf South Conference.
McCant earned All-Region honors as a junior and senior. In 2009, McCant saw action at wide receiver, running back, cornerback, safety, kick returner, punt returner, quarterback, long snapper and holder on place kicks.
Parker will play for the Tigers of Fort Valley, after starting along the offensive and defensive lines for head coach Jay Walls. Parker earned All-Region honors for the Devils this season, and will likely play defense for the Tigers.
The trio played in the Border Wars – a game pitting south Georgia football players against players from the north Florida area.
Fitzgerald’s Trenton Pruitt signed a letter of intent to play at Vanderbilt University. It is the second Division 1 signee from Fitzgerald in two seasons, as Jemea Thomas inked with Georgia Tech last February.
Pruitt was the Offensive Player of the Year in 1-AA, leading Fitzgerald to the semifinals in Class AA while accumulating over 2,000 all-purpose yards.
Tight end R.J. Davis will play at Valdosta State. Davis was one of quarterback Kaleb Nobles’ favorite targets in 2009, and earned All-Region honors for head coach Robby Pruitt.
A third Hurricane, fullback Nick Williams, will play for Carson-Newman University, a Division II school.
Williams was a four-year starter and rushed for over 4,200 yards in his career.
In Worth County, tight end Justin Tukes signed with the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Tukes was an 1-AAA All-Region selection for head coach Scotty Ward. Another standout, Sherrod Loud will play nose guard for Bill Curry and the Georgia State Panthers.
In Ocilla, two of John Gamble’s players signed scholarships to play football next season. Defensive back Fred Marshall signed to play at Presbyterian University in South Carolina.
Marshall was named to the first-team All-Region team three seasons, was a four-year scholar athlete and was a Wendy’s High School Heisman Finalist.
Lineman Terrence Woodard inked with Georgia State. Woodard earned the Most Valuable Defensive Lineman award in 2008 and 2009, and had 19 tackles for loss in those two seasons. He graded out at 83% as an offensive lineman.
In Nashville, Asa Adkins and Tre Harris each signed with Arkansas-Monticello. A signing ceremony will take place today at 1 p.m. at the Berrien High School library.
