Long drive propels Devils to win

TIFTON — Using an old-fashioned grind-em-out drive to begin the second half, the Tift County Blue Devils garnered a 13-0 win Friday night over the visiting Glynn Academy Red Terrors.

The win puts the Devils at 4-2 during the 2010 football season, as Tift will travel to Douglas next week to face the Coffee High Trojans in the Region 1-AAAAA opener for both sides.

Tift only managed 33 yards of total offense in the first half and held a 3-0 lead at intermission.

After a touchback on the opening second-half kickoff by Glynn Academy, Tift took the ball at its own 20. The Devils would then march down the field 80 yards on 17 plays for a touchdown, which came on a Tadric Jackson one-yard quarterback sneak.

“That was the big turning point of the game,” said Tift head coach Jay Walls. “We needed to do something big, and we came out and put together that long drive and scored the touchdown. It was big for us.”

The drive took 9:32 off the clock and was helped by two fourth-down conversions, one of which came on an offsides penalty by Glynn and the other coming on a four-yard run by Jackson.

Griffin Martin, who kicked a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter, kicked the point after and Tift was up 10-0.

After holding Glynn Academy to a three-and-out, Tift took the ball back over on their 30. Those three offensive plays and the punt were the only times the Red Terrors were on offense in the third quarter.

On the first play from scrimmage after taking over on the 30, Jackson hit Donnell Tuff on a 40-yard pass play. Tuff jumped up between two defenders to make the catch.

Tift could go no farther, and Martin hit a season-long 45-yard field goal for the Devils’ final points of the night.

The Devil defense held Glynn Academy to only 118 yards of total offense on the night. Running back Chris Woods was responsible for most of that as he gained 107 yards rushing on 19 carries.

“Our defense is continuing to play really well,” said Walls.

Tift ended the game with 157 yards of offense. Jackson was 8-of-16 passing for 96 yards to lead the way.

“I am really proud of our kids,” said Walls, who gained the 99th coaching win of his career with the win over Glynn.
