Devils walk by Trojans

Soccer teams win

TIFTON — Hayden Jones earned a bases-loaded walk, as Tift County knocked Lee County from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 9-8 extra-inning win over the Trojans Tuesday at the Devil Diamond.

In the eighth inning, Sy Crumley led off with a single, followed by a double by Tate Bullard over the right fielder’s head — moving Crumley over to third.

An intentional walk to Taylor Price would set up the winning walk-off by Jones.

“Anytime you play someone like (Lee), who year-in and year-out is one of the best in the state, it’s big for us,” Tift head coach Chuck Beale said.

“Maybe it shows we belong.”

Down one, the Devils (5-2) looked to win the game in regulation, as Price led off with a double off Lee starter Matthew Suggs, followed by an error on the Trojan shortstop that put runners at first and third.

After a Jackson Bergeron fielder’s choice, Ryan Bragg was hit by a pitch from new Lee pitcher Chase Griffin. Cole Janousek then had a run-scoring single to tie the game at eight.

Griffin would then get a strikeout of Hunter McAllister to give Lee County (4-1) two outs.

Seth Mann would send a shot up the middle that Griffin would get a foot on, slowing up the ball for Chase Patrick to field and throw out Mann at first base.

Tift would jump out to an early 5-0 lead, behind the bats of Mann, Crumley and Jones.

Janousek walked to open the bottom of the first and McAllister would earn a base by a fielder’s choice on a bunt attempt. Mann would hit a single to load the bases and Crumley would drive in Janousek on a single to the outfield.

Bullard would then drive in a run on a force play and two batters later, Jones drove in a runner with a double, giving Tift and starting pitcher Casey Domingue an early 3-0 lead.

The Blue Devils came back with two more in the second inning.

Bragg had a single to open the inning, and McAllister drove him in two batters later with a double. Mann then chased McAllister home with a single to give Tift a 5-0 lead.

But Lee County would come back with two runs in the third, as Tift made an error to allow a run to score, and Griffin drove in another with an RBI single.

The Trojans would take the lead in the fifth, as Lee would pound out four consecutive hits and score five unearned runs off Domingue.

Griffin, Jess Posey, Phillip Anderson and Mark Fowler would earn RBI’s for the Trojans.

The Devils would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, taking Domingue off the hook. Domingue went five innings, striking out four and allowing no earned runs.

Bragg would hit a two-RBI double with two outs to score Price and Jones to tie the game at seven.

Alex Conway would pitch the final three innings, allowing one earned run, while striking out three to earn the win.

Griffin went one-plus inning to earn the loss.

Mann led Tift at the plate with three hits, while Bragg, Crumley and Price each had two hits. Tift amassed 14 hits in the game, while Lee had 11 hits.

Tift will travel to Douglas in the region-opener on Friday.

In other Tift sports, the girls’ soccer team defeated Northside 4-0. Carlie Couch had three goals and Anna Head added a goal for Tift (4-1, 4-0 in region).

Brittney Carelock and Kelly Murray had the assists.

The Devils completed the sweep with a 2-1, double-overtime win over the Eagles. George Malagon scored with 1:53 left in the second over time on a corner kick. Malagon also assisted Pablo Orduna’s first half goal from 20 yards out.Northside scored with seven minutes remaining in regulation to tie the score.
