Demons rush for nearly 400 yards in rout

WARNER ROBINS — The Warner Robins Demons rushed took out three years of frustration Friday night in a 34-0 win over Tift County at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.

The Demons had two running backs go over 100 yards on the night, as the Warner Robins offensive line opened huge holes for Dominique Butts and Jonathan Jackson, who rushed for 116 and 101 yards, respectfully.

Warner Robins received the opening kickoff and immediately drove down the field on the Blue Devils, behind a 21-yard run by Butts and a 28-yard run by Jackson to put the ball inside the Tift 10-yard line.

Two plays later, Charles Colbert scored from eight yards out and Kyle Floyd’s PAT was wide, giving the Demons a 6-0 lead with 10:28 remaining in the first quarter.

The Devils’ defense played well after the first touchdown drive by the Demons, but the offense could not sustain a drive in the first quarter. Tift went three-and-out for three straight possessions.

Tift finally got a first down on the first play of the second quarter, when quarterback Malcom Dixon ran 21 yards on a second down play. Dixon then found freshman Donnell Tuff for a 13-yard pass, and Dixon picked up a third consecutive first down at the Demons’ 27-yard line. Micah McCant ran four yards to the 23, but after two incomplete passes, McCant was tackled for a six-yard loss on fourth down to end the scoring threat.

The Demons scored two possessions later and just before halftime.

Warner Robins marched 62 yards on an nine-play drive, capped off by a one-yard Butts’ run. Floyd’s PAT was true, and the Demons led 13-0 with just over a minute remaining in the half.

Tift had a chance to score on the final possession of the half, after taking over on their own 20-yard line after Floyd missed a field goal from 40 yards out.

Dixon hit Travoris Jones for a 10-yard pass reception, and two plays later, Dixon hit DD Jackson for a 23-yard pass play that was aided by a face mask with no time remaining in the half. Dixon then went deep for Jackson in the endzone, where the pass fell incomplete – but the Demons were called for a pass interference penalty to give Tift one final shot at scoring. Dixon again went deep for Tuff in the endzone, and the freshman nearly came down with the pass around two defenders.

Micah McCant opened the second half with a 67-yard kickoff return to give the Devils great field position at the Demons’ 32-yard line, but the Devils lost two yards on the drive.

The Demons took over possession after a 12-yard punt by Dixon, and Warner Robins went on a six-play, 78-yard touchdown drive that was capped off by a 59-yard touchdown run by Butts to give the Demons a 20-0 lead with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter.

Tift was completely dominated in the second half as the Demons held the Devils to five yards of offense, and one first down in the final 24 minutes.

Brian Sutton added a six-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, after a 36-yard run by Jackson set up the Demons inside the six-yard line.

Finally, reserve running back Taurus Coates scored with seven seconds remaining in the game to give the Demons the 34-0 win.

Tift (1-3, 0-1) will travel to Martin Stadium to take on the Lowndes Vikings at 8 p.m. The Demons will take a 3-1 and 1-0 region record into next week’s contest against Valdosta.
