NASHVILLE — Surrounded by family, friends, coaches and peers in the high school library, Berrien football players Asa Adkins and Tre Harris signed scholarships to the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
The Boll Weevils, members of Division II’s Gulf South Conference, are coached by Gwaine Mathews. Mathews will begin his sixth year at the school.
Berrien head coach Ryan Branch has had five football signees in the last two seasons, with three more expected to sign later this year.
“Asa was our No. 1 wide receiver and Tre was the No. 2; there were about 1,400 yards between them,” Branch said.
“Those are two hard working kids, who did the things we asked them to do. They bought into what we are preaching here at Berrien.”
The Boll Weevils and Valdosta State will meet Oct. 23 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium, a fact not lost by Branch.
“Your job is to make the travel squad. When you do, we will all be down there with our green and white on to cheer you on,” Branch announced to the crowd.
Branch said nearly the entire Berrien coaching staff played at the Division II level and added, “The Gulf South Conference is arguably the best in the nation in Division II ball.”
Adkins and Harris are expected to play wide receiver in college.
