TIFTON — The Tift County Blue Devils have first place all to themselves in the latest Associated Press high school football poll released Monday.
The undefeated Blue Devils were tied for the top spot in Class AAAAA with region-rival Colquitt County last week, but Colquitt lost to Coffee County while Tift defeated Valdosta 10-7 in double overtime. Coffee will get the chance to take out another top-rated team this week as the Blue Devils travel to Douglas.
Tift received nine of 12 first-place votes in the poll and finished with a 10-point lead over second-place Norcross, which received one first-place vote. Camden County received the other two first-place votes at No. 3.
Three other Region 1-AAAAA teams are in the top 10. Colquitt dropped to No. 5, while Coffee entered at No. 8 and Lowndes dropped to No. 10 despite a one-sided, 31-14 loss to Houston County. Houston received votes but was held out of the top 10. Warner Robins also received votes.
Among other area teams, the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane is still among the top teams in Class AA. The undefeated Hurricane is ranked No. 4 in the Class AA poll and received one first-place vote.
In Class A, the Turner County Rebels moved into the top 10 at No. 9. The Irwin County Indians received votes after posting an upset victory over No. 8 Wilcox County.
