The nominees for The Tifton Gazette Athlete of the Week are Abraham Baldwin College’s Paul Fitzgerald, Tift County’s Blake Reddick and Tiftarea Academy’s Alex Moore.
Fitzgerald won the men’s junior college championship at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships Saturday despite breaking two teeth in an on-court accident Friday. Playing in the doubles semifinal Friday, Fitzgerald hit a pole and broke two teeth. Despite the injury, he came back to win the championship Saturday.
Reddick had a 91-yard kick-off return touchdown for the Tift County Blue Devils football team in a 23-20 loss to Coffee. The long touchdown brought Tift within one score of Coffee, 9-7 at the half.
Moore made 16 tackles to lead the Tiftarea Academy Panthers football team’s defense in a 36-20 loss to Briarwood. Moore easily led his team in stops and made several solo tackles that ended Briarwood plays for short gains. He also played both ways throughout the game as an offensive lineman for the Panthers.
