TIFTON — Following an on-field incident that occurred after the Valdosta High-Lowndes High football game last Friday, the athletic directors in Region 1-AAAAA met Wednesday and voted to put in a new rule concerning crowds at athletic events.
Tift County athletics director and head football coach Jay Walls said he was at the Valdosta-Lowndes game and described what happened.
“From what I saw the two teams were fine, but some fans got on the field and things got a little aggravated,” Walls said. “There was a little fight or scuffle that broke out.”
As a result, the athletics directors voted to not allow any spectators onto the field of play at football, soccer or basketball games. The only time spectators will be allowed onto the playing surface will be after the fields have been cleared of both teams involved.
“We don’t want to get anyone in trouble,” said Walls. “We just want to have a ball game, shake hands with the other team and have everyone go about their business.”
The new rule will go into effect immediately.
In other Tift County news, tickets are on sale for Friday’s Blue Devils-Warner Robins encounter.
The tickets are on sale at the front office at Tift County High, and the tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. The sales will end Friday afternoon.
All tickets at the game will be $8.
