TIFTON — So far, the new guys are looking good in the Region 1-AAAAA football standings.
Joining the league this season, the Warner Robins Demons are currently the only unbeaten team in the league with a 3-0 record. Tonight, that same Warner Robins team will put that undefeated league mark on the line at Brodie Field against the Tift County Blue Devils. Tift will enter with a 2-1 mark in the league.
At the start of the season, Warner Robins head coach Bryan Way did not expect his team to be the last unbeaten team in the league.
“I seriously did not think we would be in this spot,” Way said. “I know how tough and competitive this region can be.”
The head coach went on to add his team has undertaken a simple philosophy.
“We are just taking one game at a time,” said Way. “We are thankful to be 3-0, because we just as easily could be 0-3. We just keep preparing for our next opponent and taking it one day at a time.”
That “next opponent” this week is Tift County.
“Tift has got a fine football team,” Way said. “They run a wide-open offense and I think they have the best defense in the region. Their defense is very physical, their line plays well and their secondary covers well. They are also good tacklers.
“Also, their kicking game is remarkable. I feel like their punter (Charlie Edwards) is the best I have ever seen as a coach. He helps them tremendously with field position. He is also an excellent field goal kicker.
“Tift is solid in all three phases of the game. They are going to be tough to beat.”
One thing that may affect the outcome of the game tonight is the weather forecast, which includes an 80 percent chance of rain as this is written.
“You never know how it will affect the game,” Way said. “It just depends on how much it rains and how much water the field can take. That is something as players and coaches we have absolutely no control over. We just have a wet weather plan and we will go to that, if we have to.”
No matter what the weather is, the Demons are relatively healthy.
“Considering we are playing in our eighth game, we are about as healthy as you can expect to be,” said Way.
That was echoed by Tift head coach Jay Walls.
“We are relatively healthy,” Walls said. “We have to thank (head athletic trainer) Andy Ellis and his staff for that.”
Game time is 8 p.m. tonight in Tifton.
