TIFTON — Tift County Blue Devils football player Sean Baxley was named The Tifton Gazette Athlete of the Week Thursday based on fan voting at the newspaper’s Web site.
Baxley, a senior quarterback for the Blue Devils, completed 15-of-17 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown in a 13-3 win over Lowndes. The win put Tift within one win of its first region title since 1983.
Baxley received 44.19 percent of 3,057 votes at The Tifton Gazette Web site, www.tiftongazette.com.
Kevian Prather, a football player for Turner County Rebels, was second with 41.94 percent of the votes. Prather rushed for 176 on 22 carries and one touchdown in the Rebels subdivision-clinching win over the Irwin County Indians.
Nick Williams, a football player for the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane, was third with 13.87 percent of the votes. Williams rushed for 250 yards on 29 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Hurricane clinched the Region 1-AA title.
The candidates for next week’s Athlete of the Week will be announced in Sunday’s edition of the Gazette.
