TIFTON — After leading his team to its first region title in 23 years, Tift County Blue Devil head coach Jay Walls was named co-Region 1-AAAAA Coach of the Year by the league’s sports writers. Walls shared the honor with Coffee High’s Jerry Odum.
“It’s a honor to be recognized,” Walls said. “We do work very hard, but all of the credit needs to go to the coaching staff and the players, as well as the administration.
“I have a lot of support. I have a great staff that works very hard. And I have some good football players. Good football players make you a good coach.”
Walls is currently 17-5 in his two years as Tift head coach. Under Walls’ two-year tenure, the Devils have been in the postseason twice. Under Walls, Tift has played in the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time since the 1996 and 1997 seasons.
Tift is also 11-0 at home during Walls’ two years at the helm.
“Really the kids deserve all the credit,” Walls said.
