TIFTON —
The Tift County Blue Devils fell to 0-2 in the region Friday at the hands of a Colquitt County team that started early and never let up until the final whistle. Colquitt allowed Tift to answer their first score but then went on a 35- point run to put the Devils out of the game and ensure a one-sided 63-28 win.
The Blue Devils looked as though they would make it a game answering Colquitt’s 80-yard drive with one of their own. The Blue Devils marched 76 yards on seven plays as quarterback Tadric Jackson went in from four yards out to tie the game up at 7-7.
The Packers then took over, led by the arm of starting quarterback Tyler Brown.
The Packers quickly answered Tift’s score with a 65-yard five-play drive that was capped off with a 49-yard burst from running back Tevin King. The first quarter ended on a close note with the Devils trailing just 14-7.
Brown then capped off scoring drives with tosses to Tommy Hudson from five yards out, Bobby Hill from 36 yards out and then a 56-yard pass to Ty Flournoy-Smith to bring the score to 35-7.
Colquitt added one more score before the half when Damien Bentley fell in from a yard out.
The Blue Devils trailed at the half, 42-7.
The second half did not get much better for the Blue Devils.
Tift’s Jackson went 69 yards on the first play of the second half to put the Blue Devils back on the board at 42-14.
Colquitt quickly answered and went 57 yards on five plays to extend their lead to 49-14 on D’amonte Ridley’s 11-yard plunge.
After Tift and Colquitt turned the ball over a few times on fumbles, Colquitt took possession and Brown went back to work finding Phillips again for a 40-yard touchdown pass to cap off a three-play 64-yard drive.
Tift had not left Brodie Field yet, however, and went back to do a little work of their own.
Jackson found Donnell Tuff from 41 yards out to cap a quick four-play, 65-yard drive and bring the Devils back to 56-21.
Colquitt was able to conduct a long ground attack on their next drive that got them six points on a Matt Sailor two-yard plunge. The play ate away clock and took the Packers 11 plays.
The Blue Devils fought for pride at this point, going 80 yards for the final score of the night on Jackson’s 23-yard touchdown toss to Tuff.
For the second week in a row, the Blue Devils showed fire too little too late. They dropped an important contest by a 63-28 final.
The story of the game was Colquitt’s Brown who passed for 308 yards while finding his man 18-20 times.
Colquitt reeled off 500 yards of total offense on a tired Blue Devil defense.
In defeat, Jackson was able to throw for 238 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 60 yards and two more scores.
The Blue Devils will take next week off before returning to region play the following week.
