Halfway into the 2012-13 season, the Tift County Devils and Lady Devils are setting the nets ablaze.
The Devils are 10-2 after defeating the Camden County Wildcats on Saturday, 90-47. They are averaging an amazing 74.6 points per game while giving up 58.8.
Through the first 12 games of the season — stats are not available yet for Camden — the team’s leading scorer is future Kansas Jayhawk Brannen Greene, who has scored 289 this year for an average of 26.3. In any other year, Tadric Jackson’s points per game would appear flashy, but his number almost appears minuscule beside Greene’s. Jackson averages 16 points per game, netting 176 through the first 12 games.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has noticed the Devils’ domination. In their initial Class AAAAAA poll released Sunday, they are ranked No. 1 in the state. Rounding out the top five are North Gwinnett, Archer, North Cobb and Morrow. Though all of these are metro Atlanta schools, Tift County fans are already familiar with Archer; the Tigers played two games in the McDonald’s Invitational in December, losing to Valdosta, 91-75, and edging Marist, 57-55.
The Lady Devils rolled past the Lady Wildcats, 54-37. After starting 3-3, they have rattled off seven consecutive wins to bring their record to 10-3. One of the losses was to Buford, who sits at No. 1 in Class AAA in the AJC poll.
As a team, the Tift girls are averaging 55.2 on offense and holding their opponents to 43.8 points per game.
Through the Saturday night contest with Brunswick, the team’s leading scorers are Dee Dee DeShazer, who is scoring at a clip of 17.5 per contest. Not far behind is Alexis Johnson, who averages 13.5.
The Devils and Lady Devils take the court again tonight when hey host the Lowndes Vikings at 6 p.m. The games will be broadcast live on 92.5 WKZZ. Mike Chason will handle play-by-play.

The Tiftarea Tidal Wave improved to 3-0 with their victory June 15 at the Georgia Games. The team placed many swimmers in competition, including several first and second place finishers.

Brumby’s camp making quite a racket
Mike Brumby does not stay in one place for too long on the tennis courts. He has a full load of players at ABAC Friday, and he paces back and forth, court to court. One minute, he is giving encouragement, the next he is asking players to come over for an interview. Shortly, he has everyone gathered up outside the courts.
He is checking to see who is here. Then he moves into pairing them up into matches. -
Tiftarea teams stay closer to home in 2013
Good news for Tiftarea teams. The road games this year will be a little closer. There will be no 200+ mile trips, at least not in the regular season. The regular season will kick off with a pair of games on August 23.
