Blue Devil matmen head for sectionals

TIFTON — The weather may be chilly, but the wrestling season for Coach Shawn Watson’s Tift County Blue Devils is heating up. This weekend, they head north to Atlanta to participate in sectionals at Chattahoochee High.

“It’s going to be tough,” said Watson. “We’re young, even the juniors are young for sectionals.”

Seven Blue Devils have qualified. Junior Nick McCall is in the 106 lbs. division, senior Malcolm Robinson competes at 113 lbs., freshman Quen Campbell is in at 120 lbs. and Jimmy Scarborough, a junior, wrestles at 126 lbs.

In higher weight divisions, junior Gunnar Schemmel competes at 170 lbs.. The other senior, Beau Bergeron wrestles at 220 lbs. Jesse Snow, a junior, will be wrestling at 285 lbs.

The top eight finishers in each weight class will move on to state. Watson knows it won’t be an easy task.

“It’s a very tough tournament,” he said.

In area competition, Robinson took first place and McCall, Schemmel and Bergeron each finished second. Snow came in third and Campbell and Scarborough finished fourth. Only the top four from each division are allowed to move on to sectionals. Three more Devils barely missed out on going, finishing fifth at area. Overall, the team came in fourth.

Watson is optimistic about his team’s chances at Chattahoochee and said he is relying on his seniors to carry the load. “I’m looking for great things out of our seniors,” he said.

Mike Brumby does not stay in one place for too long on the tennis courts. He has a full load of players at ABAC Friday, and he paces back and forth, court to court. One minute, he is giving encouragement, the next he is asking players to come over for an interview. Shortly, he has everyone gathered up outside the courts.
He is checking to see who is here. Then he moves into pairing them up into matches.

  • The 1990s weren’t that long ago, were they?

I don't think about my age often. Some of it's by choice as the number is increasing and some of it boils down to birthdays just not having the same allure. I have to face it. My Mom won't be setting me up with a pony ride this year.
