Errors hurt Lady Devils in first round
TIFTON — You can’t beat yourself and the other team in any type of athletic competition at the state level.
The Tift County Lady Devils softball team found that out Tuesday.
Facing off against the 31-1 Chapel Hill Lady Panthers on the road, the Lady Devils committed 8 errors in a 7-0 game one loss. The Lady Panthers then took advantage of a number of Tift errors in game two, before emerging with an 8-3 win.
“Kelsey (Jones) pitched well, but we just didn’t play defense behind her,” said Tift coach Taylor Wilkins. “Chapel Hill is a great team, and you can’t give a team like that a lot of extra outs and expect to win.”
Logan Little and Karli Smith each had a hit for Tift in game one.
Game two saw Whitney Woodall emerge with two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Devils. Jones, Smith and Jessie Brooks each had one hit and one run scored in game two, while Smith added one RBI.
In Dublin, the Tiftarea Academy Lady Panthers were eliminated from the GISA Class AA state tournament.
In their first game Tuesday, Tiftarea was defeated by Flint River, 6-1. That put the Lady Panthers in the loser’s bracket and Tiftarea emerged with a 9-6 win over Robert Toombs.
Flint River then eliminated Tiftarea with a come-from-behind 4-3 win in the final game.
No other details were reported at presstime.
Cook High had little trouble with Southwest Macon, advancing to the second round of the Class AA softball playoffs with 9-1 and 15-0 victories Tuesday at home.
Haley Rentz pitched a no-hitter in Game 1. Rentz went five innings, striking out 10 Lady Patriot batters in the contest.
Lexi Pakie and Dani Edmondson each went 2-for-3 in the game, and Leah Pickle added three runs scored on three walks.
In Game 2, Cook exploded for 14 runs in the third inning as the visiting team.
Pickle, Chantel Durden and Breanna Rockmore each had a double for the Lady Hornets. Durden and Edmondson had 3 RBI’s in the game for Cook.
Cook will host the Jeff Davis-Dodge County winner at 3 p.m. Friday in Adel.
In Nashville, the Berrien Rebelettes swept a pair of games over Howard (Macon), 7-0 and 14-3 and will face the winner of the Pierce-Bleckley series.

Omar Infante and Jason Heyward combined for seven hits at the top of the Braves' order, Martin Prado drove in two runs with a first-inning double and it could have been worse for the Mets if they hadn't thrown out two Atlanta runners at the plate. - Hess, Gaskins help ASU gain victory
