Veazey gets Bulldog sendoff

ATHENS — University of Georgia freshman infielder Chance Veazey got a hearty sendoff at St. Mary’s Hospital Wednesday from his Bulldog teammates before heading to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.

“The team wanted to show their support for Chance and wish him all the best in the next phase of his recovery,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “The Veazeys said they really appreciate the outpouring of support from the community, and they are thankful to be a part of the Bulldog family.”

Veazey, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound native of Tifton, was involved in a motor vehicle accident shortly after leaving the Miller Learning Center on Oct. 28. He underwent successful back surgery on Oct. 30 at St. Mary’s Hospital. For the next two to three months, he will continue his rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center.

In lieu of flowers and food, the family has set up a “Prayers for Chance” fund to help offset medical expenses through Athens First Bank and Trust Company (AFB&T;). Donations may be sent to AFB&T;, attention Phil Bettendorf, Senior Vice President, P.O. Box 1747, Athens, Ga., 30603. Donations can also be dropped off at any Athens First Bank location.

In Tifton, friends of the family have also established a “Prayers for Chance” fund. Donations can be made to the following banks: First Community Bank (Mike Davis or Connie Massengale), South Georgia Bank (Morris Tankersley), Tifton Banking Company (Michael Spinks or Casey Jones), Bank of America (Amy Tatum), Colony Bank (Brooke Mauldin), Suntrust Bank (Barbara Odom), Ameris Bank (Lawton Bassett), and BB&T; (Joy Ledford or Linda Mason).

A Web site where individuals can send Chance messages and check for updates has been set up by the family. To send a note to Chance and the family, please visit: www.caringbridge.org/visit/chanceveazey.

The son of Todd and Darby Veazey, Chance arrived at Georgia this fall as an honor student out of Tift County High School. He is a pre-business major. Georgia recently completed fall baseball workouts with Veazey in contention for a starting position at second base.

Chance will be able to see visitors outside of his immediate family the weekend of Nov. 13-15.
