Indians almost pull off upset

TIFTON — Going up against the No. 2-ranked Savannah Christian Raiders Friday night in the first round of the state Class A football playoffs, the 5-5 Irwin County Indians were not given much of a chance.

But the Indians came close to pulling off the upset, as Irwin could not overcome a poor first half and fell, 14-10.

Irwin only had 13 yards rushing in the first half, as the Raiders built up a 14-0 halftime lead. The Indians’ only highlight came when Kenny Richardson recovered an onsides kick attempt by Savannah Christian and went from the 50 down to the Raider 10. However, the Indians could not score.

The Indians finally got on the board in the second half on a safety when the ball went over the head of the Raiders’ punter, who was tackled in the end zone.

Irwin quarterback Clint Paulk would later hit Kevious Robinson on a 39-yard touchdown pass. Terrance Woodward ran the ball in for the two-point conversion.

However, that was as close as the Indians would get.
