CHULA — Tiftarea Academy built a 37-14 halftime lead and cruised to a 62-29 win over Citizens Christian Academy on Tuesday in Chula.
The Lady Panthers actually led by 38 points after a Karli Whiddon free throw, but the Lady Patriots outscored Tiftarea 9-4 over the final five minutes of the game.
Head coach John O’Brien’s Lady Panthers put the game out of reach for CCA early, as Tiftarea (2-0) ran out to a 23-7 first quarter lead. The lead came with Shamonica Fowler and Sam Koran sitting on the bench, as each picked up two first quarter fouls.
The Lady Patriots closed to within four points midway through the first quarter, but Tiftarea scored 10 straight points behind two baskets by Heather Kelly, and free throws from Koran, Miesha Wright, Albritton and Rebecca Turner, giving Tiftarea an 18-4 lead.
Citizens Christian had only one field goal in the first quarter, and four total field goals in the first half, as Tiftarea played aggressive man-to-man defense.
The Lady Patriots opted to have the mercy rule in effect for the final period.
Albritton led Tiftarea with 18 points, and Kelly added eight points. Fowler, Koran and Turner each added six for the Lady Panthers.

Defense bringing back pleasant memories for Blue Devils coach
Larry Dean, James Carter, Shayon Green, Jay Gaskins, Randy Parker and Josh Abbott are just a few of the names that have been defensive standouts for the Tift County Blue Devils since Jay Walls took over as head coach in 2005.
After strong performances against Locust Grove and Shiloh, Walls is having warm memories of those past defenses. In those two games, the only three touchdowns that defensive coordinator Ben Simmons’ unit has allowed were the result of turnovers by the Devil offense. - Georgia’s A.J. Green suspended for 4 games

Murray has 4 TDs in No. 23 Georgia’s 55-7 win
Aaron Murray loves to flash his athleticism. Georgia coach Mark Richt just wants his quarterback to stay healthy.
“A couple of times when he was out of the pocket he could’ve just simply thrown the ball out of bounds,” Richt said. “When he decides to turn it upfield and try to dodge people, he’s going to get splattered if he does that over and over.”
Murray passed for three touchdowns and ran for another in leading No. 23 Georgia to a 55-7 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. - Nesbitt, No. 16 Georgia Tech top S.C. State, 41-10
