TIFTON —
The first day of the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Tennis Tournament went as well as the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Stallions could have hoped for, as ABAC players in every flight advanced to the second round. The event is being played at Collin County Community College in Plano, Texas.
After seedings came out, the Stallions had five byes in the nine flights for the first round. Those players were Hernan Hatem, the top seed at No. 2 singles; Trutz Hensson, the sixth seed at No. 3 singles; Taylor Hardy, the No. 3 seed at No. 4 singles; the team of Danilo Faria and Oliver Snaider, the sixth seed at No. 1 doubles; and the team of Hensson and Tim Kuekelhaus, the fifth seed at No. 3 doubles.
While those players did not receive action in those flights Monday, ABAC did have a busy day with competition in four other flights.
Snaider, who is unseeded, won easily at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over a player from College of DuPage (Ill.).
Faria, who is also unseeded, won at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2, over a player from Meridian (Miss.) Community College. Faria will have to go against his flight’s top seed, Caio Gomes of Laredo (Texas) Community College in a second round matchup today.
Finally Monday, Hardy and Hatem, the seventh seed at No. 2 doubles, secured a 6-2, 6-0 win over a team from Itawamba (Miss.) Community College.
No matter what happens during the remainder of the tournament, the Stallions will bring home some hardware.
Snaider was named the ITA Rookie Player of the Year at the national banquet held Sunday night. That event also saw ABAC assistant coach Dale White honored as the ITA Region IV Assistant Coach of the Year.
