DOUGLAS — Coffee’s Garrett Adams pitched two innings of relief, as the Trojans held on to defeat Tift County by a 6-5 score Saturday at Charles Wilson Field in Douglas.
Tift committed four errors in the contest, while the Trojans made only one to improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in region. The Blue Devils fall to 5-3 and 0-1 in league play.
“We have got to play defense,” Tift head coach Chuck Beale said.
“It would have been nice to win on the road, but it is still early.”
Tift’s Sy Crumley went the distance for Tift, allowing one earned run over 96 pitches to earn the loss. The senior threw 61 strikes, and allowed only four hits in the game.
After the Devils failed to push a run across after stranding runners on second and third, the Trojans came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Aaron Drew and Raymond Campbell reached on back-to-back singles to open the inning and Logan Miller’s ball back to Crumley, who couldn’t get the baseball out of his glove. When he did, the ball was thrown away, allowing Coffee to plate a run. The Trojans would add a run on a wild pitch two batters later, and Coffee added a third run on a double steal.
The Devils picked up two runs in the third, after Ryan Bragg and Cole Janousek reached base to start the inning off Coffee starter Walker White. Seth Mann would then drive home a run on a force play and Crumley would drive Janousek home on a run-scoring single to cut the Coffee lead to 3-2.
The Trojans would add to their lead in the third, scoring a run on a force out. In the fourth, the Trojans added their final runs, as Hunter Ross had a two-out, two-run single. The inning was extended by two Tift errors.
Tift cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth inning.
With one out, Seth Mann was hit by a pitch — bringing up Crumley. Crumley would blast a home run over the right-center field fence to pull Tift to within two.
However, Tift left five runners on base in the final two innings, as Adams earned the save in relief of White.
The Blue Devils left 10 on base for the game. The Trojans left only two runners on.
Tift loaded the bases in their final at bat, as Tate Bullard, Taylor Price and Hayden Jones each reached base. Tyler Hobby would earn a walk, before Adams retired Bragg to give Coffee the win.
Crumley, Bullard and Bragg each had two hits for Tift.
Tift will travel to Valdosta on Tuesday.
