SYLVANIA — Rachel Delaine Owens and Whitney Allen Thompson were united in marriage at five o’clock in the afternoon Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Sylvania. The Rev. Evan Hill, friend of the groom, officiated the ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Owens of Sylvania. She is the granddaughter of Deanna Gurka, the late David Gurka and the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Owens, all of Sylvania.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Thompson of Tifton and the grandson of Gene Shumake of Douglasville, the late Lawrence Shumake and Mr. and Mrs. Grady Thompson Sr. of Tifton.

The bride was given in marriage by her parents. She wore a strapless side-swept taffeta gown with organza overlay and crystal and pearl beading on the bodice and around the bottom of the chapel-length train. Her knee-length veil was edged in matching beading. She wore plum-colored shoes and carried a bouquet of white roses, Fiji mums, orchids and greenery.

The bride chose her sister, Kathryn Owens of Sylvania, to serve as her maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Mary Dee Beal of Statesboro, cousin of the bride; Courtney Bowles of Rockmart, sister of the groom; Lauren Dees of Vidalia; Abby Jacobs of Macon; Cynthia Jordan of Savannah; and Bridget Mixson of Sylvania. The bride’s attendants wore strapless, side-swept, floor-length, plum-colored taffeta gowns and carried bouquets of green roses, Fiji mums, orchids and berries.

Flower girls were Samantha Balducci of Byron and Elizabeth Foldes of Sylvania. They wore white ankle-length short-sleeved organza dresses with plum-colored ballet shoes and carried baskets of white rose petals.

The groom chose his father, Jack Thompson, to serve as his best man. Groomsmen included Mack Branch Jr. and Jason Teel, both of Tifton, Jamie Clements and Brett Tucker, both of Atlanta, Derek Cook, Matt Drury and Drew Elrod, all of Macon, and Clayton Roberts of Winston-Salem, N.C. The groomsmen wore traditional black tuxedos with green rose boutonnieres. The groom wore an orchid boutonniere.

The ring-bearer was Creek Bazemore of Sylvania.

The wedding was directed by Doreen Dudley of Fort Collins, Colo., aunt of the bride. Readers for the ceremony were Zachary Blalock of Atlanta and Christie Canfield of Raleigh, N.C., sister of the groom. Vocalists were Jamie Clements and Cristina Martin, both of Atlanta. They were accompanied by organist Roslyn Matheson and pianist Jan Austin, both of Sylvania.

RECEPTION

The bride’s parents hosted a reception immediately follow the ceremony at Snella’s Place in Statesboro. The guest tables were decorated with long white tablecloths with plum-colored overlays. The centerpieces, designed and created by the bride, were three different arrangements of flowers and fruit.

After a buffet-style dinner, everyone danced to music by the band Drive Train of Atlanta. Reception greeters were Debbie Beal of Statesboro, aunt of the bride, and Heidi Mixson of Sylvania.

After a honeymoon trip to Mexico, the couple now resides in Sylvania.
