TIFTON —
Even though it is only the second week of September, the Southwest Georgia Academy Warriors will be playing their fifth football game of the season Friday night when they come to Chula to face the Tiftarea Academy Panthers.
The Warriors are 1-3 on the year with losses to Ashford (Ala.) Academy, Deerfield-Windsor and Southland Academy, along with a 31-0 win over Windsor Academy.
After losing quarterback Dillon Driver to graduation, the Warriors have relied heavily on their running game this season.
Teel Massey, Corey Smith and Will Warren have been the featured backs in the Southland Academy offense.
Other returning starters are Spencer Burch, Collin Cowart, Will Heard, Taft Logan, Cody Powell, John Smith, Ray Spooner, Colby Still and Garrett Vann.
There are nine seniors on the team, and last season was the first time those players had not played in the postseason. That means those players are working hard to get back to the playoffs.
The Warriors will be seeing a Tiftarea team that only played twice this season, falling 28-14 at Terrell, and 39-26 to Sherwood at home.
Coach Ryan Branch’s team has been competitive in both games, however.
The Warriors are one of Tiftarea’s oldest rivals as the teams played their first game against each other in 1979. Overall, Southwest Georgia is 9-13-0 in the series. They have won five of the last seven meetings between the two teams.
Game time will be 7:30 p.m. at the Panther Pit in Chula Friday.

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
