TIFTON —
Even though the Irwin County Indians are only two games into their 2012 football season, they are doing well in the new Class A power football rankings.
The Georgia High School Association released the first rankings Wednesday, and Irwin is tied for sixth with Claxton and Gordon Lee.
Greenville leads with a 19.36 total. Hancock Central is second at 16.33, and Dooly County is third at 15.67. Charlton County has a ranking of 15.17 for fourth, and Commerce is fifth at 14.67.
Irwin’s ranking is at 14.50.
While there are still eight games left in the season, the Indians want to finish in the top 16 in order to qualify for the state public school playoffs in Class A.
Turner County is 27th in the rankings with a 10.50 total. The Rebels are being hurt by the fact that Crisp County, the team Turner beat to open the season, is at 0-2 on the year.
The power rankings are also in effect for softball.
According to the Georgia High School Association website, Irwin is currently 14th in the rankings with a point total of 9.85. While the Lady Indians are in the playoffs, if the season ended now, Turner would be out. The Lady Rebels are 24th with a 7.78 power ranking.
