TIFTON —
The Tiftarea Academy Panthers foootball team could be mistaken for pirates.
Pirates always search for treasure, and the Panthers are searching for their first victory.
Tiftarea is 0-2 on the year and will be hosting a one-win Southwest Georgia Academy Warriors squad tonight at the Panther Pit in Chula.
“We have had a good week of practice and things went well,” said Tiftarea Head Coach Ryan Branch.
Southwest Georgia is one of Tiftarea’s oldest rivals as the teams have played 22 times since 1979.
This year’s Warrior team is very similar to his Panthers squad, Branch said.
“They are like us, because they are playing a lot of sophomores and juniors,” said Branch. “I told our kids this week, we will be playing someone their same age, so we are expecting a very good football game.”
Of the Panthers’ roster, only a couple of players are not expected to see action tonight.
“We are really healthy, we seem to be getting everyone back,” said Branch.
With the work and the team’s health growing better, Branch is expecting good things when the teams line up tonight.
“Our kids are doing great and are working hard,” said Branch. “The game should be a fun one, because we match up well with them.”
The game, which will be on 105.7 FM, will begin at 7:30 tonight.

Students challenge community, leaders to ‘stop the violence’
Eighth Street Middle School students chant "Keep calm and stop the violence" as they hold up signs in front of the school Tuesday morning for their peace rally.
“Keep calm and stop the violence,” “Save our streets” and “No more violence” were the words echoed by Eighth Street Middle School students early Tuesday morning as they stood in front of the school behind caution tape and orange cones, shouting and holding up signs as they waved at passing motorists who smiled and returned the gesture.
