Omega Pepper Festival starts today

OMEGA — The 2012 Omega Pepper Festival will be kicking off today with their annual Gospel Sing at Ponder Park, and then all day Saturday, there will be various activities to enjoy, including the ninth annual Omega Pepper Parade and some special performances.

After the raising of the colors by Bill Johnson for the opening ceremony, the following schedule of events for the Gospel Sing will kick off today on the Ponder Park stage:

• Joseph Bishop will sing the National Anthem beginning at 5 p.m.

• Phillip Robinson will then give the welcome and opening prayer from 5:15 to 5:30 p.m.

• Omega Church of God Youth will take the stage from 5:30 to 5:40 p.m.

• Omega Church of God Choir will perform from 5:40 to 6 p.m.

• Jerry Hamner will perform from 6 to 6:50 p.m.

• In His Name will perform from 6:55 to 7:45 p.m.

• Omega Church of God Youth will perform again from 7:45 to 7:55 p.m.

• Surrender will perform from 8 to 9 p.m.

• The Harper Trio will end the show with their performance from 9 to 10 p.m.

Also, those who purchased a ticket for a smoked pork chop dinner can pick up their meal from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Omega Clubhouse. Extra plates will be available; the price is $7.

Saturday’s schedule will include all day events at Ponder Park and the clubhouse. There will be art and craft vendors set up at the Kiddie Park, and music and live entertainment with the Pepper Festival DJ, Nick McClellan of After Hours Productions. The park opens at 8 a.m., and the Kiddie Park/Omega Clubhouse opens from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The following is a schedule of events for Saturday:

• The parade will kick off at 10:30 a.m.

• The Pepper Recipe Taste-Off Judging will begin at 2 p.m. at the clubhouse.

• Music will start from 3 to 5 p.m. on the Ponder Park stage.

• Local singer Austin Kilby will then perform from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

• Bonney Blue Band will perform from 6 to 8 p.m.

• Special guest Faith Jackson will end the show with her performance from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

Jackson’s music is best described as “sugar, spice and a shot of hard whiskey,” says her website. She grew up in the farmlands and on the red dirt roads of Southwest Georgia, in the Albany area. She spent her early years singing in church choirs and entering talent competitions in her teenage years.

The Bonney Blue Band, a southern rock band out of Baxley, has received radio airplay and has developed a following overseas, according to a press release. Several songs from their first release made their way to France’s southern rock radio shows Sweet Home RBA and Dixie Rock show. The band is currently working on their second studio CD and it will be available soon. Their original studio project, self titled Bonney Blue Band, is available on itunes.com and cdbaby.com.

The members are Trampis Carter, lead/backup vocals and lead/rhythm guitar; Stephen Hale, lead/backup vocals and lead/rhythm guitar; Bruce Yawn, drums; Keith Richardson, lead/rhythm guitar and backup vocals; and Dennis Morgan, bass.
