TIFTON —
The Tiftarea Academy Lady Panthers softball team faced off against Valwood and Brookwood the past two days.
In their fourth game in as many days, the Lady Panthers shut out Brookwood 11-0 in Thomasville Thursday afternoon.
Tiftarea got off the a goid start when Lakyn Souter led off the game with an inside-the-park home run on the first pitch she saw. That would be the only run Tiftarea could push across in the first.
In the bottom of the inning, Brookwood had their best scoring opportunity of the day when back-to-back singles off Brooke Keen put runners on first and second with no outs. But Madi Smith showed her range with a diving stop on a ground ball back up the middle, touched the second base bag and threw the runner out at first for the double play. Keen then got the clean-up hitter to pop out to Erin Register to strand the base runner at third.
The Lady Panthers picked up two more runs in the second when a single by Caitlyn Albritton drove in Katy Johnson from second and, after Albritton stole second, Mackenzie McWhorter drove her in. In the third, singles by Smith, Jarrett McWhorter and Lindsey Selph set up RBI groundouts by Johnson and Rachel Davis.
The Lady Panthers added two more runs in the fourth when a two-out double by Souter was followed up by RBI singles from Smith and Davis. In the fifth, Johnson was hit with the first pitch of the inning. She scored on a double by Albritton. Back-to-back singles by Mackenzie McWhorter and Register and a groundout by Souter each drove in a run to make the score 11-0.
"It has been tough playing so many games this week and not having any practice time to work on things," coach Mike Patrick said. "Hopefully next week we can get back into a little better routine."
Smith led the Lady Panthers with three hits, and Souter and Albritton each added two. Souter, Davis and Mackenzie McWhorter drove in two runs apiece. Keen pitched all five innings to pick up her fifth shutout on the season. She allowed only three hits while striking out nine.
Tiftarea softball travelled to Valdosta Wednesday afternoon and picked up two wins as both the varsity and jayvee defeated the Valwood Lady Valiants.
In the varsity game, the Lady Panthers used an eight-run first inning to defeat the Lady Valiants 19-2. Albritton's bases clearing double did the most damage in the first, but Jarrett McWhorter drove in two with a single and a walk in the inning. Johnson, Mackenzie McWhorter and Davis also drove in runs in the inning. Tiftarea used seven base hits in the second inning to push across four more runs, with Register, Smith and Davis each driving in a run.
In their seven-run fourth inning the eighth graders got in on the action as Lexi Pate drove in two runs and Macy Strenth and Jordyn Sumner drove in a run apiece. The McWhorters led the Lady Panther offense on the day with Mackenzie going 3-for-3, while Jarrett went 2-for-2, with a walk.
Anna Story pitched two innings to pick up the win, giving up no hits and striking out one. Hannah Gunter pitched one inning, giving up one run on one hit, and Sumner pitched an inning, giving up one run on one hit and striking out three.
In the jayvee game, the Lady Panthers defeated Valwood 19-1 in three innings. Ragen Lassiter pitched two innings, allowing one run on no hits and striking out two. Melissa McKay pitched a perfect final inning and struck out one. The offense was led by Abby Carswell, 2-for-2 with two RBIs and an inside-the-park home run, while Claire McGarr also went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Carlee Smith also drove in two runs on the afternoon. With the win, the JV Lady Panthers are now 8-0

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
