U.S. Army Veteran Joseph Lee Thomas, 62, of Tifton died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at Tift Regional Medical Center. The family will have a wake service from 7 to 8 tonight at Southview Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Midway Missionary Baptist Church in Holt Community in Irwin County, with committal services to follow at Oakridge Cemetery in Tifton and a repast/fellowship to follow at the Neighborhood Services Center. Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Thomas of Tifton, and his children, Bobby Gordon and Larry Jones. Professional care and services are entrusted to Southview Mortuary, Inc.
Octavia Laynette Snead, 54, of Tifton died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at Tift Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Southview Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Beulah Hill Family Life Center with committal services to follow at Oakridge Cemetery and a repast/fellowship will follow at Beulah Hill Family Life Center. Mrs. Snead is survived by her husband, the Rev. J.C. Snead Jr.; her children, J.C. Snead III and Calvin Snead; and her siblings, Deborah Hoffman, Gregory Foster and Reginald Foster. Professional care and services are entrusted to Southview Mortuary, Inc.

Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
