TIFTON —
Tift County Health Department is part of a statewide initiative this year to have more students vaccinated against seasonal influenza (flu) by partnering with the Tift County Board of Education and other organizations to administer the vaccine at local schools.
From September to October, public health staff will administer the nasal spray flu vaccine during the school flu clinics to all students that returned a signed parental consent form to the school.
“This is a great way to ensure our students are getting vaccinated against this illness,” states Traci Mullis, RN, County Nurse Manager.
“It also saves parents a trip to the health department or doctor’s office.”
If a student is not able to receive the nasal spray due to medical history or other issues and must receive the flu shot, the parent(s) will be notified before the day of the flu clinic for permission.
Parents also have the option to select the flu shot, if preferred.
Information letters and consent forms have already been sent home with children at all Tift County schools.
“If we do not receive a consent form back from a parent or guardian, we cannot administer the vaccine to the student,” says Mullis.
“Parents should ensure the form is sent back to the school ten days before the date of your child’s clinic.”
Some insurance companies will be billed; however, anyone uninsured will not be charged for the vaccine. There will be no out pocket expense for anyone, according to Mullis.

Eighth Street Middle School students chant "Keep calm and stop the violence" as they hold up signs in front of the school Tuesday morning for their peace rally.
“Keep calm and stop the violence,” “Save our streets” and “No more violence” were the words echoed by Eighth Street Middle School students early Tuesday morning as they stood in front of the school behind caution tape and orange cones, shouting and holding up signs as they waved at passing motorists who smiled and returned the gesture.
