TIFTON —
Getting contributions from several different players, the Tift County Blue Devils made their first home football game in 2012 a memorable one with a 33-0 victory over the Worth County Rams Friday night.
The Devil offense scored on its first four possessions, while the Tift defense settled down and dominated the Rams.
That first drive of Worth’s saw the Rams garner 50 yards before punting. The Rams only had 68 more yards for the remainder of the game.
Lavontae Robinson was the only Ram that Tift had trouble accounting for, as the senior had three catches for 118 yards, along with a 17-yard run. That means Robinson had 135 yards of offense, while the rest of his team had -17 yards.
While Robinson was a one-man show for Tift, the Devils got contributions from several players.
Running back Rashad Daniels had 15 carries for 94 yards, and even threw for a touchdown to Gerald Pledger.
Quarterback Ryan Wedgeworth also rushed for 94 yards on 10 carries, and threw a touchdown to Beau Bergeron.
Other players with notable nights were Frankie Mejia with four extra point kicks and a 37-yard field goal; Rashad Parks with two sacks, along with two catches for 13 yards; Austin McCant had an interception and two sacks; Kris Miller had two rushes for 34 yards; Devarious Butler had an interception; and Steven Waters had a sack.
Tift got off to a strong start when McCant returned the opening kickoff 22 yards to the Tift 46. A little more than a minute and a half later, Daniels scired from two yards out. Meija’s kick made the score 7-0 with 10:21 left in the first quarter.
Worth would go on its one long drive of the night after that score, but Tift held and forced a punt.
The Devils took over on their 10, and converting three third down conversions, drove 90 yards on 12 plays for their next touchdown. That score came on a one-yard Wedgeworth run.
A block in the back penalty put Worth back in its on territory on the next kickoff. Tift forced a punt and the snap went over the punter’s head for a safety.
That made the score 16-0 with 8:35 left in the first half.
A 15-yard return by McCant on the free kick following the safety gave Tift the ball on the Worth 41. Three plays later Daniels took the pitch from Wedgeworth stopped and threw to Pledger for the 29-yard touchdown pass.
Mejia’s kick made the score 23-0 with 6:08 left in the first half.
After several good kick returns, McCant made another nice return a few plays later. This time it was after he intercepted an Eli Reddell pass. That McCant return was for 13 yards and gave Tift the ball on the Worth 13.
Three plays later Wedgeworth hit Bergeron on a 3-yard touchdown pass. Mejia’s kick made the score 30-0 going into the half.
Even though there was no running clock in the second half, both teams played it closed to the vest over the final 24 minutes. The only score came 3:46 left in the game on Mejia’s 37-yard field goal.
Miller came in to quarterback that drive and had the two carries for 34 yards. He also helped keep the drive alive on two third down conversions.
Tift will return home Friday to face an always tough Thomas County Central Yellow Jacket team. It will be homecoming for Tift and the game will have an 8 p.m. start.

Girls basketball had long road to equality
When Georgia decided in 1945 to play a girls state basketball tournament, Macon Telegraph writer Sam Glassman was in favor, writing that the district tournaments that had always been held were just as strenuous. Days later, though, he wondered about the mental strain it was causing the players.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
