TIFTON —
The Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets will arrive at Tift County Friday night with a 3-1 record to play a Blue Devil squad with a 2-1 mark.
Last week saw the Yellow Jackets rack up all of their points in the first half in a 39-13 smashing of Cairo. TCC’s only loss on the season was a 35-33 nail-biter against Colquitt County. Their other two games were another close win against Atlanta’s Marist High (21-17) and an opening week 41-7 thumping of cross-town rival Thomasville.
After opening the season with a close loss - 33-29 - at Westover, the Devils rebounded with a pair of dominating victories over Houston County and Worth County with a combined score of 89-7.
This week’s contest will likely be a much closer score.
Central has a long tradition of powerful running teams and Coach Bill Shaver’s squad this year is no exception. The Jackets have outrushed each of their opponents and against Cairo, four of quarterback Adam Choice’s five scores were a result of the ground game. Sharing the offensive load has been halfback Deondre Cooksey, who against Colquitt County scored on a kickoff return, a pass reception and had two rushing touchdowns.
The Yellow Jackets have alternated games of first and second half offenses. The Syrupmaker and Thomasville games were first half explosions of 39 and 28 points, respectively, while most scoring against Marist and Colquitt County occurred in the second half.
This year’s meeting between the Blue Devils and Yellow Jackets will see the two squads attempting to take an advantage in the all-time series, which is currently tied 9-9. The last meeting between the two, in 2007, resulted in a win for Central.
Both Tift and Thomas County Central play their final non-region games this week. Tift starts its Region 1-AAAAAA schedule next week at Coffee while Central will begin Region 1-AAAA play hosting Bainbridge.
Game time Friday is 8 p.m. at Brodie Field.

Eighth Street Middle School students chant "Keep calm and stop the violence" as they hold up signs in front of the school Tuesday morning for their peace rally.
“Keep calm and stop the violence,” “Save our streets” and “No more violence” were the words echoed by Eighth Street Middle School students early Tuesday morning as they stood in front of the school behind caution tape and orange cones, shouting and holding up signs as they waved at passing motorists who smiled and returned the gesture.

Gattis’ grand slam leads Braves past Twins 8-3
Evan Gattis no longer seems amazed by his improbable rookie season.
Yet, there are still times when it’s a bit of an adjustment for the Atlanta Braves catcher.
