TIFTON —
Tift County Blue Devil head coach John Reid looked ahead to the upcoming game with the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets by looking back.
When asked about Friday night’s contest, the Jackets’ past was the first thing Reid mentioned.
“They’ve had tremendous tradition for nearly 20 years,” Reid said Wednesday.
Central’s tremendous tradition on the gridiron includes five state championships since 1992. Those five state titles were with former head coach Ed Pilcher, but Bill Shaver’s squad has reached the state playoffs in each of his seasons there, including a trip to the quarterfinals in 2009. Between the two coaches, TCC has only missed the state playoffs once over the past 20 seasons.
Their tradition, though, has not been limited to just past years, Reid said. He said the Yellow Jackets were “just as good this year.”
Thomas County Central travels to the Devils’ Den with a record of 3-1, their lone loss a two-point squeaker coming at the hands of the Colquitt County Packers two weeks ago. The Blue Devils enter at 2-1, having won by wide margins over the Houston County Bears and Worth County’s Rams after dropping their first contest to the Westover Patriots on the road in Albany.
Tift County looks to go into the game at virtually full strength.
Other than an injury to one of his receivers two weeks ago, Reid said the Blue Devils are going into Friday’s contest injury free and he said no injuries had occurred in practice so far this week.
Thomas County Central is Tift County’s last non-region game of 2012. The Devils will jump into their Region 1-AAAAAA schedule next week at Coffee.

Fields played, coached three eras of basketball
Imagine a player averaging 29 points per game for a career and receiving no college scholarship offers. That happened to Dona Fields.
Fields, as Dona Gaskins, is easily Berrien High's all-time leading scorer. She scored her 1,000th point as a sophomore and during her last three seasons was the Rebelettes' leading scorer in every game. She received no college attention, no offers. - Kilgore resigns baseball post at ABAC

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
