TIFTON —
Tift County High School hosted six English teachers from Ningde Normal University in Ningde, Fujian Province, China Aug. 9. The teachers spent the day speaking to tenth grade World Literature students, as well as foreign language classes, sharing about China and the Chinese culture. Students learned how to pronounce words in Chinese, and the speakers shared interesting details about China's history as well as its people.
Many TCHS students were interested in what Chinese teenagers liked to do after school and discovered that the Chinese do not have the opportunities in sports and other extra-curricular events that they do in America. This summer, TCHS English teacher Julie Rucker and TCHS seniors Sara Johnson and Noe Mejia were part of a group from Tifton who visited Ningde and spent time helping Chinese students in the foreign language department at Ningde Normal University to sharpen their conversational skills in English.
"We were excited when we heard the group from Ningde would be in the United States for a month on a cultural exchange with Hiawassee College in Tennessee," said Rucker. "We invited our friends to spend time in Tifton while they were in the states, and they were very interested in visiting our community and our school. Any time we can expose our students to other culture groups, we have expanded their vision of our world."

Girls basketball had long road to equality
When Georgia decided in 1945 to play a girls state basketball tournament, Macon Telegraph writer Sam Glassman was in favor, writing that the district tournaments that had always been held were just as strenuous. Days later, though, he wondered about the mental strain it was causing the players.
