TIFTON —
A beautiful abundance of PINK is the backdrop throughout downtown Tifton and within other local areas of the community. The Tifton Merchants Association and Main Street Program have officially kicked off Tifton’s second annual “Paint the Town Pink” event.
Tifton’s Paint the Town Pink event has been coined as the “Best Image Building Campaign” within the state of Georgia, and Tifton’s Main Street Program has received an award for this accomplishment.
“Paint the Town Pink really seems to build great synergy embraced with wonderful interactions that remind us that we are one great community with great neighbors,” said Main Street’s Economic Development Director Lequrica Gaskins. “Paint the Town Pink has transpired into an evolution of networking, strong collaboration, caring and sharing and showing neighborly love one for the other. It is more than a project that is coordinated with the hope of a busy shopping day at the conclusion of the event. Instead, there is a strong desire for hope for a common goal and a desire to ensure that loved ones are honored and individuals are informed about breast cancer resources.”
She stated that this year, the local merchants have raised the bar again with their contagious enthusiasm to make a difference.
“Fueled with the mission of raising awareness, Paint the Town Pink has definitely become a hallmark event that is setting the foundation with a new definition of volunteerism linked to our downtown with many other great community partners,” Gaskins said. “We applaud the Tifton Merchants Association, Tift Regional Medical Center, Breast Cancer Foundation, a host of volunteers, committees, businesses, physicians and local officials who collaborate together to make this event a reality. Everyone has joined forces for one common goal to raise awareness and to stress the importance of annual mammography.”
Scheduled events will occur throughout the entire month of October. A few community highlights include The Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation Survivor’s Celebration for all local survivors. The event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic Lodge on Kennedy Road.
Also, Gaskins asks that the community join them on Sunday as Mayor Jamie Cater welcomes everyone to the Paint the Town Pink prayer, balloon release and gospel sing. The event will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the downtown Veterans Memorial Park. Pastor John Hughes of First Baptist Church will officiate the prayer ceremony. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in the releasing of pink balloons in honor of their loved ones. Immediately following the balloon release ceremony will be a gospel sing that will feature The Carpenters and Old Friends. Annie’s Place and the Tift GA National Forestry Queens will be on site as well.
The Pineapple Post is teaming up with the Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation to raise money for their Breast Health Fund. From Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, 100 percent of the profits made from breast cancer items sold in the store will be donated to the Breast Health Fund; come shop with other local merchants as well to find that special gift while supporting Breast Cancer Awareness.
“We encourage families to come downtown to see the Paint the Town Pink windows. Each business is decorated to show their support for Paint the Town Pink and for your enjoyment. We are excited to see that both the city and county are showing their support by decorating their buildings as well,” Gaskins said.
The Downtown Tifton Farmer’s Market has coordinated their efforts with local partners to offer specialty items throughout the month of October. Visit the Downtown Train Depot from 8 a.m. to noon to get your fresh fruit and vegetables.
Paint the Town Pink T-shirts are available for sale with the starting price of $12. This year’s T-shirt logo was designed by J.T. Reddick’s sixth grade student, Ariana Garza. T-shirts can be purchased from Oh My Goodies, Klassy Kidz, Roberts & CO Jewelers, Cakes by Audrey and The Big Store. Profits made from the T-shirt sales will be donated to Tifton’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.
Gaskins stated, “Paint the Town Pink was created with the goal of encouraging women to have their annual mammograms, as well as to raise funds to provide mammography to the uninsured and underserved in our community. Through a variety of special events and involvement from community groups, we are excited to accomplish this feat.”
