Blue Devils host Colquitt County tonight

TIFTON — Tonight at Brodie Field, the Tift County Blue Devils play host to the Colquitt County Packers in a Region 1-AAAAAA game. The Devils come into tonight’s game trying to get back into the winning column.

Tift lost its opening game to Westover, but blew out its next two opponents. Houston County fell, 56-7, and Worth County was defeated 33-0. The last two weeks, though have seen losses to Thomas County Central and the Devils lost their region opener at Douglas to Coffee, 24-7.

A year after making it to the state semifinals, Colquitt has had a rough start this season with three wins and two losses. After dropping their opener at the Georgia Dome to North Gwinnett, 16-14, the Pack rolled off their next three. They edged Thomas County Central, 35-33, Lovejoy, 14-7, and shut out Carver of Columbus, 33-0. Last week, the winning streak was snapped in their region opener against the Lowndes Vikings, 17-14.

Though the Packers are just one game above .500, Tift County head coach John Reid said it was who Colquitt had played.”

“They’ve had a tough schedule,” he said.

The Lowndes game was dominated by the defenses. Each side only gave up a single touchdown, with Lowndes adding a punt return score and a field goal and Colquitt getting a defensive score when O’Shay Williams returned a blocked Vikings field goal try for 70 yards. The Vikings completely stifled the Pack’s rushing game, holding them to a net of -8 yards on the ground.

“It was a tough loss to Lowndes,” Reid said.

While they had the single score last Friday, Packers head coach Rush Propst has gotten scoring from several different players this season and regularly uses two quarterbacks - Cole Segraves and Daniel Mobley. Segraves had a 51-yard touchdown pass last week.

“They have a great group of athletes,” said Reid.

Reid said his team had been hampered by inexperience this season but sees a bright future ahead.

“We just have to quit hurting ourselves,” he said.

After tonight’s game, both teams will have long road trips next week for region games. Colquitt heads to Brunswick High for a game against the Pirates. The Devils will be making the drive to Kingsland to meet the Camden County Wildcats.
