FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. —
James Freeman Hester, 90, went to be home with our Lord on Oct. 3, 2012. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. with Chaplain Frank Dole officiating. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chula with the Rev. Larry Layfield officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at the church.
Born Sept. 15, 1922 in Chula to the late William Riley Hester and Serena Busbin Hester, Mr. Hester was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Thelma Nolan Hester; three brothers; and a sister.
Mr. Hester had resided in Fort Walton Beach since 1960. He attended schools in Irwin County and ABAC. In World War II, he was a member of the Army Air Corps, contributing to the development and maintenance of aircraft at Muroc Army Air Station (known today as Edwards AFB). After the war, he was a civil service employee as an aircraft mechanic, and following 30 years of service, he retired from Eglin AFB. After retirement, Mr. Hester spent time with friends and family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach and took pleasure in many hours with God through personal Bible study.
Mr. Hester is survived by a son, John F. Hester of Fitzgerald; a daughter and son-in-law, Miriam H. and David Laird of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; a brother, Lowell Hester of Chula; a sister, Flossie Childs of Chula; a sister-in-law, Eloise Hester of Tifton; his grandchildren and their spouses, Daniel and Holly Dowden, Tonya and Travis Irwin, James Hester and Crystal Hester; five great-grandchildren; and a niece, Betty Childs of Chula.

I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital.We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
