TIFTON —
The Irwin County Indians continue their Region 2-A schedule tonight in Homerville where they will be meeting the Clinch County Panthers. Irwin will hope to keep the offense churning and win their third straight game.
Clinch will be coming into tonght’s game with an extra week of preparation as the Panthers were off last week. In their last action, they edged the Telfair County Trojans in a squeaker, 17-9.
Telfair was also the last opponent of the Indians, but the Indians had a much easier night, winning by a 55-21 score.
“We were able to keep rolling,” Irwin head coach Jon Lindsey.
And roll is what Irwin did. The Indians amassed a 36-0 lead in the second quarter, eight total touchdowns from six players and picked up 430 rushing yards on an amazing 16.6 average yards per carry. The Trojans blowout was the first game for Irwin after an off week and two weeks after the Indians gained over 500 yards on the ground in its upset 41-34 victory over Wilkinson County at Irwinton.
Lindsey believes this week’s game will be much tighter, though.
“We’ll be doing two tough things. We’re playing Clinch in Homerville and they’re ranked.”
The latest Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll lists the Panthers as the No. 10 team in the state. As for the home part of it, Homerville is a difficult place for opponents. The Panthers have not lost at Donald Tison Field since 2009.
Clinch has put together a 3-2 mark this year and are winners of their last two games, a 13-12 win over Seminole County and the game two weeks ago against Telfair.
Lindsey said his team will not be affected in their preparation by Clinch’s off week, but he is sure they have been using it to their advantage by implementing new strategies and new wrinkles to their offense.
He said his strategy will be the same as it has for other games during the Indians’ hot streak.
“Don’t fix it if it isn’t broken,” he said.
