TIFTON —
The Tift County Blue Devils will be looking out for No. 1 tonight. They will be on the road for a contest with the Camden County Wildcats, the state’s top-ranked Class AAAAAA team.
Blue Devils head coach John Reid is certainly aware of Camden’s status.
“Number one, number one,” he said.
The Wildcats are 6-0 this year and have run away from the competition in every game they have played.
They started off the year with a 42-0 rout of Peachtree Ridge in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. After demolishing Ocala, Fla.’s, Vanguard High, the Wildcats turned their attention to Savannah and their former region rivals, smashing Johnson High, 55-0, and wrecking Beach, 48-12. In their 1-AAAAAA debut, they delivered Valdosta’s worst home loss in decades and last week delivered a 39-12 defeat of Coffee.
Camden is also working on another impressive mark - its region win streak. The Wildcats have not lost a region game since 1999, a streak that covers 89 games.
Their lineup boosts two University of Georgia football commitments; J.J. Green and top prospect quarterback Brice Ramsey have both decided to play collegiately in Athens.
The Devils have recently had a string of bad luck against tough opponents.
After a narrow opening week loss to Westover, Tift rebounded with easy wins over Houston County and Worth County. Against Thomas County Central, the Devils took a 14-7 lead into the lockerroom at the half, but saw the Yellow Jackets’ veer offense kick into high gear as they pulled out a 34-14 win.
In Region 1-AAAAAA action against Coffee and Colquitt County, the Devils would score their touchdown in each game on their final possession.
“We have to worry about ourselves,” said Reid.
“At this point, we have to get better tackling. We have to do better with the little things.”
The Blue Devils will return home next week against Valdosta. The Wildcats are hosting Lowndes tonight in the Winnersville Classic.

Gattis’ grand slam leads Braves past Twins 8-3
Evan Gattis no longer seems amazed by his improbable rookie season.
Yet, there are still times when it’s a bit of an adjustment for the Atlanta Braves catcher.
Like when someone recognizes him in the grocery store.
