Moore historical marker dedicated by the Tallassee Chapter

TIFTON — A dream was finally fulfilled Saturday, Oct. 6, when a gathering of approximately 50 people met at 409 Love Ave. to dedicate the DAR historical marker for Susan Lane Tillman Moore.

Moore, the first woman elected by popular vote to the Georgia State Senate in 1933-34 and 1939-40, left a legacy of historical accomplishments such as served on the Board of Regents of the University of Georgia; secured the right for women to serve on juries in Georgia; worked for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, becoming a 2-year college by upgrading its library from 1,700 volumes to 8,500 volumes; secured paving of state roads on state property (Moore Highway was the first road to be paved on state property in Tifton); and secured stumping for the Coastal Plains Experiment Station and funds for operation.

Liz Keith, regent, welcomed everyone to the dedication and recognized family and special guests, which included Charlotte C. Martin, granddaughter of Moore, and her family; and Suzanne Wade, great-granddaughter of Moore.

Two others present, representing their DAR chapter, were Jean Gay, member of the John Benning DAR Chapter in Moultrie, and Mary Lynne Keener, regent, of the Joseph Habersham DAR Chapter in Atlanta. Moore was a member of the Joseph Habersham Chapter.

The Tift County High School ROTC Color Guard presented the colors following the invocation by Mary Guill, chaplain. The National Anthem, led by Monie Moody, and Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag, led by Bobby Fresh, was participated in by all. Members of the Tallassee Chapter gave the reading of The History of the Marker by Carolyn Abell, The Memorial to Mrs. Moore by Jane Sheridan and the Dedication of the Marker by Gladys Wiseman.

Holly Hall unveiled the marker and Kelly Fresh presented the red, white and blue wreath. A response for the Moore family was given by Martin.

Following the song by Kate Smith, “God Bless America,” closing remarks were given by Keith thanking everyone for coming and especially for the chairs for the program provided by the Ridge Avenue Church of Christ and to Wiseman for her tireless efforts to finally realize closure on getting the beautiful marker mounted in front of Moore’s former home.

The benediction was given by Guill. The next regular meeting of the Tallassee Chapter will be at 4 p.m. Nov. 20 at Maple Court with a “Musical Salute to Our Veterans” by Angie Carr.
