TIFTON —
Students in teacher Amanda Casey’s fifth grade classroom at Matt Wilson Elementary School observed and diagrammed various cells and microorganisms using microscopes during science labs recently. Students rotated throughout science labs in the room to be able to observe, identify and diagram items such as harmful bacteria, protozoa, algae, virus, cells and cell structure, cells of the human body, human blood cell, Casey’s cheek cell, onion cell, and bread mold.
After students made their own cheek cell slide using a tooth pick, wet-mount slide with cover slide, blue food coloring, and cheek cells’ swab, they took the wet-mount slide home in an envelope to share their learning experiences with others. Students also read about cells and microorganisms in readers workshop and wrote poetry about cells and microorganisms, including elements of figurative language such as similes and metaphors.
Students gave opinions about their observations during lab work and wrote down their thinking in writers workshop. They mentored other students in fifth grade using expert groups and peer tutoring. Two identified GATE students in Casey’s classroom led science labs observations while other students rotated in the back of the room.
Assistant Principal Michael Slaven was invited along with Dr. Alan Smith to participate in the lab experiences as well. Casey noted that the students enjoyed “being the teacher” or expert while Slaven and Dr. Smith participated in the labs.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
