TIFTON —
The third annual Ameris Bank ‘Help Fight Hunger’ Food Drive is coming to a close Wednesday, but not before the bank and United Way of South Central Georgia (UWSCGA) make a big push through the final weekend. Ameris and UWSCGA employees will be present at a number of weekend events to gather food donations, all of which remain local. Each item also brings a cash match to the local United Way.
“We so greatly appreciate partners like Ameris Bank who not only use their position to mobilize the caring power of communities where they do business, but also put their own skin in the game by matching the donations of local residents,” said local United Way Executive Greg Millette.
Speaking of games, weekend food collections begin Friday night at Brodie Field. Ameris Bank and UWSCGA employees will be collecting items under an Ameris Bank tent set up near one of the home-side gates prior to the Tift-Lowndes matchup. Cash and credit card donations will also be accepted. Donors will receive a bag of ‘goodies’, and everyone can also register to win a sweepstakes drawing for a gift basket provided by the bank.
“The Touchdown Club and TCHS Athletics have provided us such a valuable opportunity,” said Erin Parker of Ameris Bank, “and we look forward to a great response from Blue Devil fans.”
On Saturday, food collection boxes will be available at both the Downtown Tifton Farmers Market, on the historic train platform, and the Wiregrass Farmers Market at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village. The Wiregrass Farmers Market coincides with Trick or Treat in the Village and the A-Maze-ing Zombie Run, both at the museum. Families can drop off food donations at the market on their way into either of these additional events.
Saturday evening, the Halloween theme continues with food collection at the 4th Annual Le Bal Costume d’Halloween at the Tifton Elks Lodge. While The CHANGE Foundation has selected Ronald McDonald House as the principal charity for this year’s ball, they have also invited UWSCGA and Ameris Bank to collect nonperishable foods from partygoers as they arrive for the evening. The person providing the most items at this event will be awarded with two free tickets to the 5th annual event, planned for next October.
Sunday evening brings the annual Fall Festival at Tifton First United Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome to this community event in the Activities Center. The festival is free, but all families that can are asked to bring one canned good per child. The church will deliver the canned goods to Ameris Bank on Monday to be included in the total count for cash-match purposes.
In addition to these events, the Salvation Army Tifton Service Center will be conducting a canned food drive at Piggly Wiggly in Tifton on Friday and Saturday between 9am and 6pm. The Salvation Army will be keeping a count of these items to add to the ‘Help Fight Hunger’ total for our community before placing the items in their own local food pantry.
At the end of October, United Way of South Central Georgia will take responsibility for delivering food items collected at the bank, or at Ameris/UWSCGA collection points, to local food-serving agencies such as the Tifton Soup Kitchen and local food banks. The cash match will be used by UWSCGA to further its Community Impact mission of building better outcomes in education, income stability and health.
Also, the Fall Festival at First United Methodist is from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
“We know the Tifton community is very giving, as evidenced by so many organizations providing these collection opportunities,” said Millette. “We look forward to a great response from local residents helping fight local hunger throughout this coming weekend.”

Students challenge community, leaders to ‘stop the violence’
Eighth Street Middle School students chant "Keep calm and stop the violence" as they hold up signs in front of the school Tuesday morning for their peace rally.
“Keep calm and stop the violence,” “Save our streets” and “No more violence” were the words echoed by Eighth Street Middle School students early Tuesday morning as they stood in front of the school behind caution tape and orange cones, shouting and holding up signs as they waved at passing motorists who smiled and returned the gesture.
