TIFTON —
The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes have clinched a spot in the state tournament, but for everyone else the postseason is still up in the air. Two schools - Tift County and Turner County - are off this week while everyone else not named Berrien plays at home.
Tift County (2-7) is off this week. The Devils get a break from their grueling Region 1-AAAAAA schedule before they play the Brunswick Pirates (3-5) in the season finale. Brunswick has a big game at home with Valdosta Friday night. Tift’s last game saw them lose to the Lowndes Vikings, 42-7.
Tiftarea Academy (1-8) has a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Deerfield-Winsdsor Knights (8-1) at Webb Memorial Stadium in Albany. Southland Academy broke a three-game losing streak with the Panthers last week, 37-19, while Deerfield destroyed Pinewood Christian, 49-7. The Knights hold the advantage in the series, 15-2-1, and the last time Tiftarea defeated them was 11 games ago in 1998. Last year: 41-20, Deerfield.
Irwin County (6-2) hosts the Wilcox County Patriots (6-2) at 7:30 p.m. at Indian Stadium in the area game of the week. The Indians edged Turner County last week, 27-26, while the Patriots smashed up Swainsboro in a non-region game, 40-24. It has been a streak of fives for Irwin, who have won five consecutive games this season, but have lost five consecutive games to Wilcox. Irwin has to beat Wilcox and Charlton County in the final week to win the Region 2-A title. Last year: Wilcox, 41-7.
Berrien (3-5) renews their rivalry with the Cook Hornets (6-2) at Cook Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Cook’s last game saw Brooks County clinch the Region 1-AA championship with a 35-21 win. Meanwhile, the Rebels notched their third victory of the season against Pelham, 21-7. The Hornets have had the better of the annual affair over the years, 41-13-4 and have not lost to Berrien since the Rebels took the 1998 game, 41-9. Last year: Cook, 51-6.
Fitzgerald (7-2) meets the Thomasville Bulldogs (2-6) at Jaycee Stadium at 7:30 p.m. In an eerie coincidence, both teams’ last opponent was the Early County Bobcats and both games featured a 17-14 final. Thomasville lost, but Fitzgerald won, which clinched a state playoffs appearance. The Bulldogs were off last week. Fitzgerald has taken the past three games in the series, but Thomasville holds a 10-8-2 advantage. Last year: 35-7, Fitzgerald.
Worth County (4-4) will attempt to move up the Region 1-AAAA standings with a home game against the Westover Patriots (5-3) at 7:30 p.m. Both teams won wild games last week, the Rams defeating Albany, 35-27, and Westover slipping past Dougherty, 41-32. Worth has done very well in the all-time series - they have a 20-6 all-time record and have won the past three - but the Patriots have hit a hot streak lately and have won their past three. Last year: Worth, 23-18.
Turner County (5-4) is idle this week. For last game of the season, they will play the Clinch County Panthers. The Rebels’ recent woes continued last week when they were edged by Irwin County, 27-26, increasing their losing skid to three. They are also teetering on the edge of the power rankings, which determine the teams that will make the state tournament. Fortunately for Turner, they have a two-game winning streak for the first game after the bye.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
