TIFTON —
A four-year-old girl riding her bicycle Thursday morning was accidentally struck by a Tifton-Tift County Sanitation truck in the area of East 44th Street.
Sgt. Williams with Tifton’s Georgia State Patrol Post 13 said the child and several other children were riding their bicycles in the 700 block of East 44th Street at approximately 11:50 a.m. when a Tifton-Tift County Sanitation truck’s front bumper hit the rear tire of the four-year-old girl’s bicycle.
He said the child came across the front of the sanitation truck from the left side of the street in an attempt to enter her driveway as the driver, Johnnie Wesley Watson, was attempting to pick up trash at the child’s residence.
Williams said Watson was watching for another child when the four-year-old appeared in front of the truck. The front bumper of the truck made contact with the bicycle’s rear tire just as Watson was attempting to stop. Williams said with the child being so small, Watson was unable to see her.
He said the child, who was wearing a helmet, fell off of her bicycle. He said she’s okay and didn’t sustain any injuries.
