East Georgia takes two from Fillies in softball doubleheader

TIFTON —  The East Georgia State College Lady Bobcats had a productive day on the diamond Tuesday, taking two games from the ABAC Fillies in an afternoon softball doubleheader played in Tifton. East Georgia won on scores of 4-0 and 9-2.

The Fillies were locked into a close battle for most of game one. Both teams were scoreless until the fifth inning when East Georgia plated two. They would tack on an additional run in both the sixth and seventh frames.

The Lady Bobcats managed to keep the Fillies’ bats silent all afternoon, holding them to only a pair of hits, one by Bobbie Jo Royals, the other from Sunnie Sorensen. Lauren Thrasher also walked twice.

Despite taking the loss, Rachel Hill had an excellent day on the mound, striking out eight.

The second game seemed to have all the indications of a wild one.

East Georgia erupted for three runs in the first inning. ABAC battled back with two runs of their own, with RBI’s coming from Karli Smith and Alexis Ricks, but the team was unable to respond when their opponents struck for single runs in the second and fourth innings.

Four more insurance runs crossed the plate in the sixth for the Lady Bobcats, giving them more than enough to take the 9-2 victory.

ABAC’s two runs came on only three hits and they found the going tough against the Lady Bobcats’ Mallory Riner, who struck out 15 batters.

Ricks started the game for the Fillies and struck out two before being lifted for a relief pitcher after getting two outs in the third inning.

ABAC will be back in action again later this week when they travel to Newnan to face Georgia Perimeter in a doubleheader, with games scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Fillies will return home on Friday, March 29, when they face Gulf Coast Community College in a 2 p.m. game.
