The 18th annual Fire Ant Festival will be held this weekend in Ashburn. Offering family-oriented fun for all ages, this year’s festival has a Michael Jackson theme, “Fire Ant Thriller.”
The Fire Ant Festival features a wide variety of entertainment. Colony Bank’s Heritage Park is the setting for all evening entertainment. The following is a schedule of events:
Friday:
• 6 p.m. - Lip sync contest - pop music and moonwalk contest
• 7:30 p.m. - Disc Connected K9’s world famous Frisbee dogs
• 8 p.m. - Todd Allen Herendeen, celebrity impersonator, will do Michael Jackson and a variety of other celebrities
• 9:30 p.m. - Fireworks at Heritage Park
Saturday:
• 8 a.m. - Fire Ant 5K Run and One mile Fun Run at Turner County Alternative School on Gilmore Street
• 9:45 a.m. - Presentation of Colors by American Legion Post 98 and National Anthem by the Turner County High School Chorus
• 10 a.m. - noon - Health fair starts at alternative school gym
• 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Art show and photo contest at alternative school gym
• 10 a.m. - Pet parade, arts and crafts, and food vendors open, BBQ Bash and Cook-Off at Heritage Park
• 10 a.m. - Free entertainment at Heritage Park all day
• 10 a.m. - Registration for Poker Run at Turner County Elementary School
• 10:30 a.m. - Dr. Doctor Band at Heritage Park
• 11 a.m. - Disc Connected K9’s world famous Frisbee dogs
• 11 a.m. - Poker Run at TCES
• Noon - until - Carnival and dancer’s point at Heritage Park
• 12:30 p.m. - Dr. Doctor Band
• 1 p.m. - Disc Connected K9’s world famous Frisbee dogs
• 1:30 p.m. - Fire Ant Calling Contest at Heritage Park
• 1:45 p.m. - Men’s Pantyhose Contest at Heritage Park
• 1:50 p.m. - Bubble gum blowing contest
• 2 p.m. - Dr. Doctor Band
• 2:30 p.m. - Juggler Bruce Sarafian
• 3 p.m. - Disc Connected K9’s world famous Frisbee dogs
• 3:30 p.m. - Dr. Doctor Band
• 4 p.m. - Juggler Bruce Sarafian
• 4:30 p.m. - Dr. Doctor Band
• 5 p.m. - BBQ Bash and Cook-Off awards
• 5:30 p.m. - Strawberry Cook-Off at Thrasher House Grounds
• 6 p.m. - Strawberry Cook-Off and photo awards at Thrasher House Grounds
• 6:30 p.m. - Chili dog eating contest at Pat’s Place
• 7 p.m. - Street dance with “Dance thru the Decades” with DJ Nick McClellan
The carnival is presented each year during the festival by Family Attractions Amusement Company of Valdosta. It opens tonight from 6 p.m. until closing, 6 p.m. until closing Friday and noon until closing Saturday. Arm bands can be purchased in advance for $12 each by 4 p.m. Friday at the Ashburn-Turner County Chamber of Commerce.
Each arm band is good for one of the following days: Thursday night (6 p.m. until closing), Friday night (6 p.m. until closing) or Saturday during the day (noon until 6 p.m.). Arm bands purchased in advance are not valid for Saturday night from 6 p.m. until closing.
Arm bands will be available at the carnival for $15. There will be some new rides. For all rides, visit http://www.familyattractionsamusements.com/.
The annual 5K Fun Run will be at 8 a.m. Saturday. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. Advance entry fees are $20 for adults and $5 for students. The adult entry fee will be $25 on the day of the event. Runners will be grouped by age and gender. The 5K Fun Run benefits the local Child Abuse Council. For more information, contact Jonathan Perry at 567-9320. Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
