TIFTON —
To Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes head coach Jason Strickland, tonight’s matchup between his team and the Class A Charlton County Indians is more than the final game of the non-region schedule.
Though Strickland spent the 2008-11 seasons leading Lamar County in Barnesville, he was previously an assistant at Charlton.
Strickland said the connection between he and his previous school makes this game “a bit more special” and though he is ready for tonight’s game, he admits he is “ready to get it over with.”
Not only does Strickland consider Indians head coach Rich McWhorter one of the best in the state, he said that he still calls McWhorter for advice.
Fitzgerald and Charlton County both enter Friday’s game at 2-1. Fitzgerald is coming off an overtime loss at Albany’s Monroe High and Charlton defeated Class AAAAA Bradwell Institute 12-0. While the Indians’ offense has only scored 32 points in their first three games, Strickland sees them as being as good as the previous high-powered Charlton teams.
“Seeing them on film, they seem as physical as usual,” he said, and that they “play pretty good defense.”
Tonight’s game will be at Jaycee Stadium in Fitzgerald and game time is 7:30 p.m.

Students challenge community, leaders to ‘stop the violence’
Eighth Street Middle School students chant "Keep calm and stop the violence" as they hold up signs in front of the school Tuesday morning for their peace rally.
“Keep calm and stop the violence,” “Save our streets” and “No more violence” were the words echoed by Eighth Street Middle School students early Tuesday morning as they stood in front of the school behind caution tape and orange cones, shouting and holding up signs as they waved at passing motorists who smiled and returned the gesture.
