TIFTON —
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as local citizens visit the downtown area, they will notice that Tifton has definitely “Painted the Town Pink.”
Main Street’s Economic Development Director Lequrica Gaskins stated in a past article that, “October is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness and we will join in the efforts of honoring those who have experienced cancer, elevating cancer awareness and enhancing cancer care services within our community.”
The following is a calendar of “Paint the Town Pink” events for this month in Tifton:
• October 1 -31
- The Pineapple Post - Breast Cancer Awareness Sale: During the whole month of October, 100 percent of profits will be donated to the Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation Breast Health Fund.
• October 5
- Community Health Fair: 9 to 11 a.m. at the Leroy Rogers Senior Center
- Concert in the Park (Veterans Memorial Park): noon
• October 6
- Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation’s Survivors Celebration (for all local survivors): 10 a.m. to noon at the Masonic Lodge on Kennedy Road.
• October 7
- BJ’s Sunday Buffet (804 W. Seventh Street): $1 per person will be donated to the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.
- Prayer, balloon release and gospel sing (hosted by the Tifton-Tift County Main Street Program and the Tifton Merchants Association): 3:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. “Please join us as we honor those we love.”
• October 12
- Concert in the Park (Veterans Memorial Park): noon
• October 18
- Live and Silent Auction (hosted by the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation): Silent Auction - 6 p.m. and Live Auction - 7 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. “Raising money to help local survivors in need.”
• October 19
- Concert in the Park (Veterans Memorial Park): noon
• October 20
- Downtown Farmers’ Market Fall Festival: 8 a.m. to noon at the Downtown Train Depot. “Get fresh fruit and veggies to promote your healthy regime as we celebrate National Food Day!”
• October 23
- “Early Detection of Breast Cancer: It’s just as important to find Nothing” Lecture (presented by Tift Regional Medical Center): 6 p.m. at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center. This is a free event. Debra Hardeman, TRMC Women’s health navigator, will discuss breast cancer and the importance of early detection. A complimentary meal will be provided. Seating is limited. Register at 353-6316.
• October 25
- Paint the Town Pink Fashion Show (presented by the Tifton Merchants Association, featuring downtown boutiques
and stores): 7 p.m. at the Tift Theatre. Door prizes will be given away; each ticket purchased is a chance to win. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Breast Cancer Awareness.
• October 26
- Concert in the Park (Veterans Memorial Park): noon
• October 27
- The Pineapple Post Pink Day: 10 percent of sales will go to the Tift Regional Foundation for Women’s Health. Pink lemonade and pink petit fours will be served.

TPD Lt. Steve Hyman recognized by Tifton Sertoma Club Thursday
Steve Hyman, an officer with the Tifton Police Department, is all smiles after receiving the Tifton Sertoma Club's 2013 Service to Mankind Award, presented by Chad Alexander, past president of the club.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
